Frequently asked questions
Are you licensed private investigators?
Yes, Cheat Busters is licensed under the NSW Government CAPI Licensing System. The Cheat Busters Management ensure all our Agents hold their own individual Private Investigator License.
The licensing authority regulates the industry to ensure that standards are upheld and private investigations are carried out lawfully and without infringing the privacy of others. You should always check that a Private Investigator is licenced.
What areas do you service?
Our services are available throughout Australia with an extensive network of professional investigators nationwide. Contact us and you may be surprised at how cost effective it is to get the information you require.
Are my details confidential?
Absolutely, we guarantee discretion and confidentiality. All files, documentation, video and photographs will be returned to you at the end of the job. You receive all originals and we keep nothing on record. Your details are held securely and will never be shared. Cheat Busters Management ensure that when employing an Agent they sign a confidentiality agreement prior to undergoing any work on behalf of Cheat Busters.
How do I start a private investigation on my partner?
Initial contact will be either by email or phone 0413 005 000. After the initial discussion your private investigator will either meet with you in person or speak to you via phone to decide on a plan of action. The plan will depend upon each individual circumstance. In general there will be a period of surveillance and intelligence gathering and a final written report supported by video or photographic evidence (if appropriate). At each step you will be kept up to date with regular verbal reports. We require you to sign a Confidentiality Investigation Agreement to begin the investigation.
Why do I need to sign a Confidentiality Investigation Agreement?
A Confidentiality Investigation Agreement is for your protection and ours. Private Investigators need to uphold certain standards and ensure that they have proper terms for engagement. The person seeking the information must be bona fide in their request for the private investigation of another party – this is to protect everyone involved. This ensures no illegal investigation is carried out.
How long does an investigation take?
Determining the length of a private investigation is dependent on the depth of services required. It is difficult to estimate how long each investigation will take to get video/photographic evidence – those being investigated are rarely open about their activities. It may only take an hour to gain evidence, or it may take several attempts to capture on camera. The more information we are provided the speedier the investigation may be. You will receive regular updates from your private investigator to monitor their progress and projected cost.
What is required to commence a private investigation?
In order to commence an investigation, we require the following information
• Details on what it is you want us to look for while we are investigating
• Start location, time and date
• Details of vehicles used
• Photograph of the subject you wish to be investigated (if possible)

Will my partner find out they are being investigated?
The objective of the Private Investigator is to get the information as quickly and discretely as possible. We understand that knowing the truth and knowing it quickly is really important to our clients. We also understand that circumstances at home can become difficult if your partner finds out you have engaged someone to investigate them. We therefore work with utmost confidentiality, discretion and privacy for all concerned reducing the chances of the investigation becoming known to any other parties.
How much will it cost and how do I pay?
We charge an hourly rate plus expenses. Every task is unique so it is not possible to list costs and fees here. Payment is easy, either by cash, cheque, money order or direct debit. Please contact us to discuss your requirements at no obligation.
How do you follow people?
Our personnel are highly experienced and trained in surveillance modes from pedestrian through to multi-vehicle observation ensuring investigation is carried out without detection. Surveillance can be operated by car, public transport or on foot depending on the individual being followed.
Are hidden cameras legal in Australia?
Yes they are, when installed to obtain evidence of suspected theft or wrongdoing. We have an extensive range of camera equipment that can be installed into almost any application. The lens' are tiny and require a hole about the size of the nib of a ballpoint pen so they can be confidently concealed virtually anywhere. It is illegal to record audio without consent so sound is not included in this service.
Can Cheat Busters locate anybody?
Cheat Busters are experienced in their field and have access to a wide variety of resources that enable us to achieve a high level of success when attempting to locate people.
We have always maintained good results locating individuals within Australia and other countries.
Could I do the surveillance work myself or get a friend to do it?
There are two potential issues with this. Firstly, the person you are likely trying to catch on camera, may notice you or a friend of yours, and therefore blow the whole surveillance. This could make the task even harder when you do engage a Private Investigator.
Secondly, since your friend is not licenced they may be breaching several laws in Australia and so you could be inadvertently putting them at risk of prosecution.
The fastest way to get results in surveillance is when the suspect has not been confronted about their behaviour, they are more likely to show themselves publicly – best not to risk alerting them to your suspicions.
